This complex 4 ft by 4 ft sign, made of 2 inch thick HDU with a reinforced 2 x 4 back structure, uses a sandblasted background (horizontal grain) with elevated letters.

Both Pelican and fish icons are made using the CarvedArt style (see Product Line 2), and both are made as appliqués , primarily because the smaller appliqués can be handled more easily in the processes of multi-sandblasting, hand-carving, and hand-painting than can the large sign substrate. Both the Pelican and fish have 3 level sandblast treatment and are then hand-carved and hand-painted into high-relief sculptures using chisels, gouges, a knife, and rasps. The two appliqués, after sanding and painting, are set aside for later installation on the sign substrate.

All of the sign lettering is elevated above the sandblasted background, and the outer edge of each letter, which has a different color than the flat center,is sandblasted at an additional level. The letters and borders are then hand-sanded and painted two coats of primer and two coats of 1-SHOT color oil enamels. Finally, the two completed appliqués are epoxied and screwed to flat areas of the HDU substrate after it has been completed.

This sign was priced at $1500, about $95/square ft. The posts and other support structure, and sign installation, have additional costs.
