Sign and Plaque Product Line Descriptions
- Product Line 1 - Sandblasted HDU Dimensional Signs and Plaques
These are our most popular signs; attractive, eye-catching, inexpensive, and long-lasting with low maintenance. We offer a wide variety of sign shapes, sizes, font styles, and art icons for our personalized and attractive three-dimensional HDU signs and plaques. Sign sizes range from 12 by 6 inches to 48 by 22 inches. These are suitable for house and apartment numbers, building and business names, architectural signs, informational signs, warning signs, yacht and RV names, and other signage that does not require elaborate multi-color artwork. These attractive semi-custom signs, which are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors, fonts and artwork, are priced very reasonably. They are weather and moisture resistant, and will outlast a wood sign by a factor of two or three, requiring very little maintenance.
To see the design features, selections, and prices download the Product Line 1 Catalog by clicking on the blue underlined link above the picture. Sign holders, stands and frames for these signs are described in Product Line 7. Prices for signs and plaques in Product Line 1 range from $50 to $250 (single-faced). Our most popular signs have prices from $60 to $100.
If you want to know more details about these products, or you want to order one, go to the Product Line 1 Catalog page, where you will find in downloadable PDF documents the information necessary to specify and order one - the Catalog, four Art Appendices, an example of a PROOF, and Specification and ordering forms.
- Product Line 2- CarvedArt Dimensional Signs and Plaques
These signs and plaques have upgraded art compared to Product Line 1.They are suitable for residences, estates, businesses, and organizations where an dramatic and detailed sign will will attract attention while giving the impression of quality or elegance. The artwork is larger, more elaborate, and often depicts a scene rather than a single object. The artwork is first sand-blasted at several different levels (as many as five) to give a low bas-relief sceulptured look. It is then hand-carved, hand-sanded, and hand-painted with artist brushes using oil enamels in bright or pastel colors. The artwork is bright and colorful on these signs!! There is an additional cost of $50 to $70 for single-faced signs (1.8 times that for double-faced signs) over the cost of the same sign without this art in Product Line 1, truly a bargain for original hand-carved oil paintings of this quality. We can use an art icon or scene design from our own art library (we have over one 130,000 art icons and scenes available and categorized on our computers) or we can work from a computer file, a photo, or a sketch you supply.
To see the design features, selections, prices and the order form, download the Product Line 2 Catalog by clicking on the blue underlined link above the picture. Prices for signs and plaques in Product Line 2 range from $125 to $245 (single-faced), and up to $440 for double-faced signs. - Product Line 3 - Redwood and Cedar Dimensional Signs and Plaques
ArtSignWorks makes beautiful classical sandblasted, and/or hand-carved and/or routed California Redwood , Western Red Cedar, Red and White Oak, American Cherry and genuine Mahogany signs and plaques. We offer the same shapes, sizes and artwork choices as for High Density Urethane (HDU) signs (Product Lines 1 and 2), at 10-15% higher same prices. Many people prefer the natural beauty of stained and varnished redwood or cedar instead of the enameled paint finish of HDU, even though more maintenance is required for outdoor wood signs than HDU signs. We recommend our wooden signs only if you want a natural or rustic finish; if you want an all-painted sign, we recommend HDU ( Product Lines 1 and 2) instead.
We use only the finest grades of clear all-heart vertical-grain Certified kiln dried California Redwood , Western Red Cedar, Oak, Mahogany, and Cherry for our wood signs which we get from a specialty lumber supplier. This top grade of wood has no knots or defects. We use 8 to 12 inch planks so we do not have to piece together smaller planks in an attempt to achieve a consistent grain pattern for our horizontal, vertical, small decorative, and ribbon signs. Medium and large decorative signs (either one-sided or two-sided) require two planks with similar grain patterns butted together side-by-side with a tight tongue-in-groove joint and dowels and epoxied.
To see the design features, selections, prices and the order form, download the Product Line 3 Catalog by clicking on the blue underlined link above the picture.Prices for signs and plaques in Product Line 3 are about the same as for equivalent signs in Product Lines 1 and 2, ranging from $50 to $300 (single-faced) with Silhouette Art. Hand-painted, hand-carved CarvedArt icons are an additional $50 to $100 per face. We also offer design features for these signs we do not offer for Product Lines 1 and 2 signs, such as routed letters and artwork.
Sign holders, stands and frames for these signs are described in Product Line 7

These fixtures enable you to install your sign with minimum effort, usually less than half an hour. - Product Line 8 - Large Custom Dimensional Wood and HDU Signs
We design, build and install custom larger (from 2 by 3 ft up to 8 ft high and 4 ft wide) dimensional HDU, PVC, redwood or cedar signs on a custom and project basis(i.e.,we quote each job separately rather than use catalog prices). We have a complete integrated in-house capability for computer graphics design, vinyl mask and stencil cutting, sandblasting and blast carving,, precision sawing, power sanding, routing, hand-carving and hand-sanding, gold leaf gilding, and airbrush and detailed artist brush painting. We specialize in dimensional signs of several types, with a variety of advanced design features such as HDU and PVC cutout letters and art appliques, sandblasted or routed incised (i.e., engraved or intaglio) letters and art, sandblasted backgrounds with and without grain patterns, bas-relief multi-layer sandblasted/hand-carved and hand-painted scenes (CarvedArt),and high-relief HDU sculpture appliques which are hand-carved and hand-sanded. We paint our signs with the finest enamel paints (1-SHOT),or stains and varnishes (wood only). We can also gild applique or incised letters or art with 23 K gold, copper or aluminum leaf. We can either provide the sign for you to install on your own support structure, or we can build the sign support structure and install the sign (in the Southern California area only).
We prefer to make our larger custom signs in High-Density-Urethane (HDU), rather than Redwood or Cedar, because it lasts longer, requires less maintenance, and will not rot or crack. If you want an all-painted sign, we strongly recommend HDU. This has been the material of choice in the sand-blasted sign industry for many years. HDU is impervious to water and will not rot because of its closed-cell construction, and it has good temperature stability so that it will not crack due to freezing and thawing. This provides superior weather resistance compared to wood. Finishes last considerably longer. A dramatic grain pattern can be created using a wire stencil (i.e., grain-frame) during the sandblasting process, so that the background of the sign looks just like sandblasted redwood grain. Alternatively, we can make the background look like sandstone or leave it smooth (for applique or incised letters).
HDU is not as strong as wood. A double-faced HDU sign will be much thicker than one made of wood. For our larger signs, we put a sheet of 1/2 inch thick MDO plywood on the back of single-faced signs, or insert a sheet of MDO sandwiched betwen two HDU faces for a double face sign, to give additional strength. We can also supply posts and crossbeams (heart redwood or prssure-treated fir) and can install the sign including setting the posts in concrete (Southern California area only).
Some clients prefer a more natural look, with all or part of the sign varnished or stained. In this case for sandblasted signs we prefer to use clear all-heart kiln-dried California Coastal redwood, which has a more dramatic grain pattern and is more resistant to rot than western Cedar, but is also more expensive. Cedar is more suitable for non-sandblasted signs, where the letters may be routed or hand-carved into the cedar or epoxied onto the Cedar, and the background is smooth, stained and varnished Cedar. We use either a tongue-and-groove or biscuit epoxy joint to assemble individual boards into a solid wood face. For small areas, we can also use exotic hardwoods such as Patagonian Rosewood, Santos Mahogany or Brazilian Cherry (we stock these woods for Product Line 4).
We can work with your photo, sketch, or computer file of your design, or we can create a design for you. We accept a number of vector file formats, or we can also work with a raster file. We will work collaboratively with you in the design phase, to develop a PROOF of your design for your review and approval. We will provide quotes and a firm schedule at no cost to you at the same time we provide you the preliminary design PROOF.Costs for our Custom HDU or wood signs range from $50 to $125 per square foot (single-faced), depending on the design and complexity of the artwork. Typical time after your PROOF approval until sign completion is 4 to 6 weeks for large custom signs. If we design and build the sign support and install the sign, add another week or two.
We request a deposit (50% of sign value) AFTER you approve the PROOF, at the time you place your order and we begin fabrication, with the remainder due after the sign has been shipped and/or installed.
If you want to know more details about our Large Dimensional signs, or you want to get a cost estimate, go to the Product Line 8 Catalog page, where you will find in downloadable PDF documents the information necessary to specify and request a cost estimate for one - the Catalog, four Art Appendices, an example of a PROOF, and Specification and ReQuest an Estimate form.
