Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
I want to make my own wood engraved sign. Do you have any suggestions on how I should do this?
It is not impossible for you to to make your own sign; however, it is tedious and a lot of work, because most people have hand tools. It takes less time if you have a power router. For an engraved single-faced hand-carved sign 24 inches by 24 inches, and 30 letters/numbers and one piece of art, we estimate it will take you about 30 hours of labor and $100 of wood (Minimum 1 1/2 in thick HDU sheet cost is $400) to make your own wood sign, using only pencil, paper, chisel and hammer, sandpaper, and paintbrush and stains/clearcoat ($20). Since we have at our disposal about $350,000 in computers and sign design software, CNC routers, high capacity sandblasters, vinyl and sandmask cutters, digital vinyl printers, paint sprayers and airbrushes, and computerized paint mixers, we can make the same sign with less than 3 hours labor and $50 in material, and it will look a lot more professional. It is extremely difficult and takes years of experience to design a professional looking wood sign without computer design software and a vinyl cutter, which costs over $20,000. We wish you the best of luck if you want to make your own wood sign without proper equipment. Please see our article How to Make Wood Signs for more details.
